What happens to your stuff after we haul it away

When the truck pulls away, most people stop thinking about their old couch. We don’t, because where it ends up matters, both for the city and for whether we are doing this job right. Here is what actually happens to the things we haul.

The goal: keep it out of the landfill

A surprising amount of what gets called “junk” still has life in it. Our first move is always to sort, not to dump. If something can be reused, recycled, or donated, that is where it goes. Only what is truly spent ends up at a disposal facility. It is better for Brooklyn, and honestly it is how the job should be done.

Furniture and household goods

Couches, tables, dressers, and bed frames in decent shape are worth more to someone else than they are in a dumpster. Usable pieces get set aside for donation where we can place them. The stuff that is genuinely broken gets broken down and disposed of properly.

Appliances and metal

Refrigerators, washers, stoves, and AC units are mostly metal, and metal recycles well. These get routed to recycling rather than the landfill. Units with refrigerant get handled the right way, because you cannot just toss those on the curb.

Electronics and e-waste

This one is not optional in New York. The state bans tossing TVs, computers, and most electronics in the regular trash. We keep them separate and send them to proper e-waste recycling. So that closet of dead monitors and tangled cords does not just disappear into a hole in the ground.

Construction and renovation debris

Drywall, lumber, flooring, old fixtures: a lot of this is sorted and recycled where the material allows. Because so many Brooklyn buildings are old, debris from renovations sometimes needs careful handling, which is part of why being EPA Lead-Safe certified matters.

Why we bother

Hauling everything straight to a dump is faster and easier. Sorting takes time. We do it anyway because keeping reusable stuff in circulation and recyclable material out of the landfill is the right call, and because plenty of our customers care where their old things end up. If that is you, get a free quote and we’ll take it from there.
